Engines

There are three different versions of the Jeep Cherokee and the engine options available are different for each. The original Jeep Cherokee is the SJ series, which offers four engine options.  The entry-level option is a straight-six engine, the 258 cu in (4.2 litre) AMC I6. From there, three types of V8 engine are offered. In order of least to most powerful they are the 360 cu in (5.9 litre) AMC V8 2-barrel, the 360 cu in (5.9 litre) AMC V8 4-barrel and the 401 cu in (6.6 litre) AMC V8 4-barrel.   

The next version of the Jeep Cherokee is the XJ series. There are a wider variety of engine options available for the XJ series. The entry-level option is the 2.5 litre (150 CID) AMC 150 I4, which is a straight-four engine designed specifically for the Jeep Cherokee and vehicles like it. A 60-degree V6 option is also available. Two of the more notable engine options in the XJ series are inline-four diesel imports, one from Italy and one from France.    

The Jeep Grand Cherokee model also offers several engine options, including a 2.5 litre diesel, a 4.0 litre straight six and V8s in 5.2 litre and 5.9 litre form.

Safety

One of the deficiencies of the Jeep Cherokee SJ is the fact that it does not have a great deal of modern safety features, which really came into play starting with the XJ series. As a result, drivers looking for a vehicle with an emphasis on safety may want to bypass the SJ series. 

The XJ series, on the other hand, features safety features such as an anti-lock braking system (ABS), side door-guard beams and a prominent stop lamp. 

In the Euro NCAP crash tests, the Jeep Grand Cherokee scored four stars out of five in the category of adult passenger protection. A rollover mitigation system has become standard with this model.   

Style

The SJ series has both two door and four door models and the spaciousness of the vehicle is a trait that runs throughout all of the Jeep Cherokee models.

The XJ series is available only as a four-door model and the interior of the vehicle features a stiff unibody frame that improves noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) measurements.

 The Jeep Grand Cherokee offers options such as leather, cloth and coloured interiors. The Jeep Grand Cherokee also offers more space for the rear passengers than either the SJ or XJ series.
