The 208 GTI is the proud heir to Peugeot's tradition of high-powered compact cars, going all the way back to the iconic 205 "hot hatch". The new model, with its forceful stance and ferocious engine (the same 1.6 litre petrol unit as in the RCZ sportscar), delivers all the pace and handling you would expect – along with surprisingly low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions (just 47.9mpg and 139g/km respectively)
The exterior design of the 208 GTI gives it a poised, catlike appearance, accentuated by the narrow halogen headlights and 17" Carbone Technical Grey alloy wheels with a diamond finish. The chrome highlights of the twin exhausts and mesh grille round off the impression of racing quality.
Once you move off, the performance of the car more than confirms the initial positive impression. Boasting 200bhp and 275Nm of torque at 1700rpm, the 208 GTI can reach 62mph from a standing start in less than seven seconds. As well as being an accomplished performer at high speeds, moreover, the availability of thrust at such low revs enables excellent progress in congested urban and suburban areas. Meanwhile, the finely-tuned suspension and Electronic Stability Programme offer top-notch cornering capability.
