As a motorist, it's your responsibility to ensure your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition at all times. To do so, an annual MOT test is required for all cars over three years old.
The test checks that your car meets safety and environmental standards and advises on work required should it fail. It's important to remember that this is not the same as a service, which assesses your vehicle for faults which may impact on performance. A valid MOT test certificate does not guarantee that your vehicle will not require servicing up to the next test.
Only licensed centres are authorised to undertake MOT testing, and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency ensure garages comply with roadworthiness standards. As possessing a valid MOT certificate is a legal requirement, it's important to select a reputable testing centre. Such providers will include manufacturer-trained technicians who follow a stringent process to guarantee the consistency and accuracy of results. They're specially trained to undertake the test, and routine assessments are undertaken to ensure the quality of service provided.
Once you've booked an MOT test, all you need to do is deliver your vehicle to the provider at the correct time. The work will be performed in a designated MOT testing bay, and you may be able to view the process while you wait. If your vehicle passes, you'll receive a certificate stating the result and date of test. Should it fail, you'll receive a 'notification of failure'. You can still drive if the previous certificate is still valid, or if you're on the way to a garage for repairs. Otherwise, you may be stopped by police and prosecuted if your vehicle is unroadworthy.
