Toyota crossover seen testing at Nürburgring

23rd July 2014

Toyota looks set to present a fresh challenge to manufacturers in the crossover segment after an SUV-styled model was seen testing at the Nürburgring. Given the popularity of the bourgeoning vehicle class, it would make sense that Toyota would have its own offering, and the new model will be based on its Auris hatchback.

The model seen cruising around the famous German circuit would sit beneath the RAV4 in the line-up as a baby-crossover, and would likely get both two and four-wheel drive. The test mule shared many similarities with the Auris, and changes include a raised ride height. The familiar 'V' shaped front grille and headlamp arrangement remains, as does a wide front air intake beneath this. At the rear, a short windscreen topped by a subtle spoiler could also be seen.

There's been no word on engine options yet, and given Toyota's status as a leader for hybrid power, the inclusion of such a system seems likely. The current-generation Auris and Auris Touring Sports form part of the Japanese brand's hybrid range, and the crossover is expected to offer similar low-emission high-economy performance.
