What you need to sell a vehicle when the owner is deceased
If you would like to sell us a vehicle registered to a deceased person then please refer to the guidance below to establish if we can help and what documentation we will require.
We hope that this will help to make the valuation and sale as straightforward as possible during what we know can be a challenging time.
1. Are you able to provide a copy of the Death Certificate?
If yes, please move on to step 2. If you are not able to provide a copy of the death certificate we won't be able to proceed with the purchase of your vehicle.
2. Is the Value of the deceased's estate less than £10,000?
If the estate is valued at less than £10,000, we can purchase the vehicle and pay the next of kin. We will require:
- Death Certificate
- A photo ID for the next of kin
- Next of kin bank account details (statement/card)
- Next of kin declaration at point of sale
If the value of the deceased's estate is over £10,000, has probate or confirmation been granted? If so, we can purchase the vehicle provided you are able to provide the following. Note that payment will be made to the account used to manage the deceased's estate.
- Death Certificate
- A photo ID and proof of address for the executor
- Grant of probate/confirmation document
If the Estate is valued at over £10,000 and Probate/confirmation has not been granted
If a solicitor is managing the estate we will require a letter or email from them granting permission for the vehicle to be sold and confirming who payment should be released to. You will require:
- Death Certificate
- A photo ID of the person bringing the car to dealership for sale
- Written authority from the solicitor advising that the vehicle can be sold. The letter/email should also include guidance on where the payment should be made to.
If a Solicitor is not managing the Estate
If the estate is not being managed by a solicitor, we can still potentially purchase the vehicle. In order to ensure we are acting in good faith, if you can provide a copy of the deceased's will, with confirmation from the solicitors that the will is the last known version, we can purchase the vehicle and make payment to the executor named on the will document.
We will require:
- Death Certificate
- A photo ID of the person bringing the car to the dealership for sale
- Copy of the Deceased's last will and testament
- Written confirmation from the solicitors that the will is the last known version
Please note that while we do our best to ensure the above is accurate, the information provided is for guidance only. Please ensure to consult with a professional advisor prior to proceeding to get a valuation on a deceased person's vehicle. You must have the right to sell the vehicle.
