The Motability Scheme can seem a bit confusing and may leave you with several questions. You might be wondering if you're eligible, what the scheme includes, and how the payment works. We've created our frequently asked questions to give you the information you need when it comes to Motability.
The Motability site also has an Eligibility Checker that will tell you if you're able to apply to join the Scheme.
To join the Motability Scheme, you receive one of the following disability allowances:
- Higher rate mobility part of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Higher rate mobility part of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Enhanced rate mobility part of Adult Disability Payment (Scotland)
- Higher rate mobility component of Child Disability Payment (Scotland)
- War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
- Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
You need to have at least 12 months left on your allowance if you're applying to join the Scheme. If you have less than 12 months, you'll need to wait until your allowance provider renews your allowance.
Young people can join the Motability Scheme, but what they can do and how they join depends on their age and whether they’re the customer or they have an appointee.
- Children under three: If a child's allowance is confirmed, you can apply for the Scheme up to three months before their third birthday. However, the lease cannot start until the child has received their allowance.
- Children over three: If a child is eligible for the higher rate mobility part of DLA, you have the option to apply for the Scheme. However, the application must be made in the name of the appointee (usually a parent or guardian) who is responsible for the allowance.
- Everywhere except Scotland: Children who qualify for the higher rate mobility part of DLA can continue to receive this benefit until they turn 16, as long as they remain eligible.
- If youlive in Scotland: Children will remain on DLA until they're transferred to Child Disability Payment. After this, they will continue to receive Child Disability Payment until they reach the age of 18.
Only one driver under 21 is allowed on your Certificate of Motor Insurance. This can be the disabled customer or another driver living at the same address. Unless they’re the customer, drivers under 21 need to hold a full driving licence.
If you’re the customer: There are no restrictions for joining the Scheme with a provisional licence, as long as you meet our criteria. To learn to drive in your Scheme vehicle, you must be listed as a driver on your Certificate of Motor Insurance and be accompanied by a nominated driver aged 21 or over, who has held their licence for at least three years. All other provisional licence holders: Other provisional licence holders must be aged 21 or over and meet all our criteria. If you’re under 25: There are a few restrictions:
- Petrol, diesel, and hybrid vehicles must have an ABI Insurance Group rating of 16 or lower and a power output of 120 brake horsepower (bhp) or less.
- Electric cars must have an ABI Insurance Group rating of 21 or lower and a power output of 140 bhp or less.
You’ll receive a brand-new vehicle along with a comprehensive package that covers various aspects:
- Insurance
- Servicing and maintenance
- Full RAC breakdown assistance
- Yearly tax
- Three drivers, and you can change these whenever you like
- Kwik Fit replacement tyres
- Windscreen repair or replacement
- 60,000 mileage allowance over three years, or 100,000 for WAV Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles
- Many adaptations at no extra cost
You can drive up to:
- 60,000 miles over a three-year lease
- 100,000 miles over a five-year lease
If you drive more than that, you’ll be charged 5p per mile.
No, we're not able to sell you the Motability Scheme vehicle at the end of your lease.
The best way to check if a vehicle suits your needs is to take a test drive. We're here to assist you every step of the way. Before placing an order, we will guide you through a Statement of Responsibilities form to ensure that both the vehicle and the Motability Scheme align with your requirements.
Contract Hire is a type of finance option. It is a leasing agreement that is offered through the Motability scheme, that funds the use of a vehicle. As a form of lease, using contract hire means you don't own the vehicle. Our Motability Contract Hire agreements include a comprehensive worry-free package encompassing insurance, servicing, and breakdown cover.
If you’re new to the Motability Scheme, you may be able to part exchange your car to help pay for your new vehicle.
By participating in the Motability scheme, you'll exchange either all or a portion of your higher-rate mobility allowance for a brand-new car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle. Payments will be made directly from your allowance provider to Motability, making it a simple and easy process. Remember, leasing a vehicle through the Motability Scheme gives you a worry-free package including insurance, breakdown coverage, and servicing. So, the only thing you need to budget for is fuel. Plus, you'll still receive any other parts or components you normally get.
An Advance Payment is an upfront cost you need to pay for certain large or high specification vehicles, in addition to your weekly mobility allowance. It’s not a deposit and it’s non-refundable. Some vehicles have no Advance Payment or cost less than your weekly allowance, allowing you to spend the remaining allowance however you choose. If you have chosen a vehicle with an Advance Payment, you'll need to pay it in full either before or on the day you receive your new vehicle. Your New Vehicle Payment can be applied towards your Advance Payment. If eligible for the £750 New Vehicle Payment*, you can choose to put it towards your Advance Payment.
If your allowance provider determines that you're no longer eligible for the higher rate mobility allowance, it is important to inform Motability. They will then assist you in returning your vehicle. Once you have returned your vehicle, you don't need to continue paying for your lease.
Lease durations typically last for three years from the date you obtain your car, or five years for Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles. You can find this date specified in your lease agreement. At the end of your lease, you have several options available to you:
- Choose another vehicle to lease through the Scheme.
- Explore the possibility of extending the lease for your current vehicle.
- Return your vehicle and have your mobility allowance reinstated.
If you're leasing your first fully electric car through the Scheme, Motability will arrange and cover the cost of a home charge point and standard installation. To have one installed, you'll need to have off-street parking such as a driveway or garage. Additional expenses may apply if any work is needed to gain access to your electricity supply or if cables need to be extended from your main fuse box.
No, you can keep the home charge point after your lease finishes. Your home charge point warranty runs out three years after when your charge point was installed.
Terms and conditions
*You will receive the £750 if you order your first vehicle before the end of 2024. If you're already on the Scheme and have not had your New Vehicle Payment yet, you'll get it whenever you get your next vehicle.
If your Advance Payment is more than £750 you’ll need to pay the difference to your dealer, but if it’s less than £750 we’ll send you the difference after you get your vehicle. Your dealer will ask if you’d like to do this when you’re placing your order. If you’ve already ordered and would now like to put your New Vehicle Payment towards your Advance Payment, please speak to your dealer directly. You can only use the New Vehicle Payment towards the cost of your vehicle's Advance Payment. You cannot use it towards the cost of adaptations or optional extras. If you do not ask for your New Vehicle Payment to go your dealer, we’ll send this to you in full within a few weeks of getting your new vehicle.
**Non-standard installation may incur additional costs. For example, if your parking space is not next to your home or your electrical equipment needs to be upgraded. Or, if you do not have off-street parking or you cannot have a home chargepoint installed, the Motability Scheme will give you access to the bp pulse network of public chargepoints instead.
