Young people can join the Motability Scheme, but what they can do and how they join depends on their age and whether they’re the customer or they have an appointee.
- Children under three: If a child's allowance is confirmed, you can apply for the Scheme up to three months before their third birthday. However, the lease cannot start until the child has received their allowance.
- Children over three: If a child is eligible for the higher rate mobility part of DLA, you have the option to apply for the Scheme. However, the application must be made in the name of the appointee (usually a parent or guardian) who is responsible for the allowance.
- Everywhere except Scotland: Children who qualify for the higher rate mobility part of DLA can continue to receive this benefit until they turn 16, as long as they remain eligible.
- If you live in Scotland: Children will remain on DLA until they're transferred to Child Disability Payment. After this, they will continue to receive Child Disability Payment until they reach the age of 18.
