Nissan X-Trail: Celebrating 25 Years and More Than Eight Million Sales

For a quarter of a century, the Nissan X-Trail has stood as one of the brand’s most successful global SUVs. First launched in 2001 and later introduced to US drivers as the Rogue, the model has evolved from a practical, rugged SUV into an electrified and highly advanced crossover. Throughout this progression, it has remained true to its core strengths of durability, versatility and everyday usability.

The name itself signals its purpose. “X” represents extreme outdoor activities while “Trail” reflects its capability on rough terrain. At launch, Nissan positioned the X-Trail as “a true SUV” that blended sporty character with impressive versatility. Early press material highlighted how it offered an alternative to traditional off-road 4x4s, delivering better fuel efficiency, improved manoeuvrability and a more affordable entry point.

“With its simple, practical, and robust design, it strongly appealed to young families who enjoyed outdoor activities and to customers with active lifestyles,” recalls Shinchiro Irie, Programme Design Director.

A Global Success Story

Since its debut in spring 2001, the X-Trail has stayed true to a core formula: functional design, everyday practicality and capability across all kinds of roads.

“The X-Trail must be a functional crossover that adapts to every stage of life. Its design never sacrifices functionality, and functionality never compromises design,” explains Satoru Tanaka, Chief Product Specialist.

Across four generations, the model has built a significant global presence with strong performance in Africa, Oceania, Asia and South America. From the third generation onwards, it entered the US market under the name Rogue, where it quickly became Nissan’s best-selling vehicle and remains so today.

Now, the latest X-Trail continues to develop this legacy with Nissan’s advanced e-POWER hybrid technology and the e-4ORCE all-wheel drive system. Together, they provide smooth, efficient and confident performance in a wide range of driving conditions.

Today, the X-Trail is sold in 95 countries and has surpassed eight million sales worldwide. In the UK alone, more than 167,400 X-Trail models have been registered since 2001.
