After the Suez Crisis of 1956 in which oil supplies where vastly reduced and fuel prices rose to extraordinary high levels the British Motor Corporation came up with an idea to build a car that was small, efficient and affordable to combat the large fuel guzzling cars. Designer Alec Issigonis was handed this challenge and rose spectacularly to the occasion by creating the first ever small front wheel drive car – The Mini. The first model to go on sale was the Morris Minor Mini in 1959, at first people were sceptical about this bulldog looking small car, but this soon changed and the mini went on to become a phenomenon the world over. In 1994 Mini was bought by BMW who re-designed the brand to make it more relevant to the market. Today the Mini is still thriving and although it has been re-designed it still has the traditional look which is loved by millions the world over.
