When choosing your next car, one choice that is key is to understand and decide what type of transmission you need.
Choices:
Automatic Transmission
Manual Transmission
Automatic Transmission Cars
An automatic transmission will manage gear changes on behalf of the driver. Automatic Cars often referred to as an 'Automatic' or 'Auto', do not contain a clutch pedal, making them more straightforward to operate as a driver.
Many customers choose an automatic as it allows the driver to concentrate on navigating the road and managing their journey. This is due to users of automatic vehicles not being required to think about when to change gear, and don’t have to wrestle with finding “the biting point” of the clutch and acceleration at the right moment.
Another difference is the Gear leaver layout:
P (parking) – R (reverse) – N (neutral) – D (drive) – 2 (2nd gear) – 1 (1st gear).
While it may take some practice to drive an automatic car – keeping in mind that only one foot is required to control the brake and accelerator – many actually prefer the driving experience of an Automatic Transmission Vehicle.
At Charles Hurst we offer an extensive range of used automatic cars for sale from our showrooms across Northern Ireland. Each of the used cars we sell undergoes extensive checks and tests to ensure they reach our high standards of service history and condition.

This was my first time purchasing a car from a dealership, and unfortunately the experience aligned with all the worst expectations I had. I was searching for a Porsche Cayenne Coupe S and found one listed on AutoTrader. I contacted the dealership and spoke with James Beattie, who acted as the sales advisor for the vehicle. During the sales process, communication was frequent and responsive, calls were returned promptly, emails were answered quickly, and I was repeatedly assured that the car was in excellent condition and fully prepared for sale. I travelled from Birmingham to Belfast to view and collect the vehicle. Upon arrival, I immediately noticed warning messages on the dashboard, including TPMS and coolant system alerts. When I raised this with James, I was told not to worry and was assured that I could take the car to any Lookers dealership in England, where the issues would be resolved at no cost to me. To protect myself, I requested written confirmation of this agreement, which James provided via email. After making full payment and returning to Birmingham, I contacted multiple Lookers dealerships, only to be told that they had no record or understanding of any such arrangement. At this point, it became clear that the assurances given during the sale were either misleading or entirely false. When I followed up with James to clarify the way forward, communication immediately deteriorated. Calls went unanswered, emails were ignored for weeks at a time, and when responses did come, they consisted of vague promises to “get back to me†that were never fulfilled. Eventually, I was told that he had “done his part†and that I should handle the matter myself. This was less than one month after purchasing the car. The situation worsened significantly when I attempted to register the car for work use and discovered that the vehicle had no valid MOT and in fact, had been without an MOT for over a year. I had unknowingly been driving an unroadworthy vehicle for nearly a month. I did not check the MOT status prior to purchase because I did not expect a reputable dealership to sell a vehicle presented as “prepped and ready for sale†that had been without an MOT for such a prolonged period. I escalated the issue, at which point an After Sales Manager, Matthew Orchard Lisle, was assigned. Matthew was the only positive aspect of this entire experience. He followed up promptly, arranged the MOT, and ensured the car was taken to Porsche to resolve the outstanding issues professionally. From 26 January 2026, when I purchased the vehicle, it was not fully resolved until 9 April 2026. This timeline speaks volumes about the unnecessary stress, time, and effort I had to endure for issues that should never have existed in the first place. In conclusion, while I would not label the entire dealership as irredeemable, my experience with James Beattie was unacceptable. The conduct displayed, misrepresentation, lack of accountability, and complete disengagement after payment, falls far below the standard expected of a premium car dealership. If a cash buyer of a high‑value Porsche can be treated this way, it raises serious concerns about how other customers are treated day‑to‑day. Avoid James Beattie. Learn from my mistakes and take your business elsewhere.
If you want nothing but problems with your car then go here. If you want to have awful customer service go here. If you want a job and are useless go here, clearly the only question in their interviews are ' are you a waste of space?' and if you say yes you get the job on the spot. Over 5 years I've had to deal with them and from receptionist, to sales, to servicing they are the worst you can find. Do yourself a favour and don't visit them. Customer service - awful, Ignoring emails - brilliant. Selling damaged cars e.g old brake pad that squeak, broken interior, window tint peeled off - brilliant. Making people wait 45 mins for a job they personal tell you they will fix in 10 mins and then after waiting getting someone that's never done the job before to fix it because they are too busy - brilliant, not cancel previous finance so that you will get charged for your old car and new car - brilliant. If you don't take this advice to never used Charles Hurst vauxhall on the voucher road after someone who has had nothing but problems for 5 years or more then your don't complain when you have problems in the future. Having to bring you car to them due to the squeaky brakes they provided for you and then be told on 3 different occasions that they can't hear the squeak, even though they drive the car around the front and when they brake the brakes squeak, and then be told that they heard it but you'll have to record it and still nothing be done is one of the highlights. Making it worse, on the 3rd time of them lying about the break noise they send you home with a screw in your tire meaning you are out money paying for a new one.
I want to Thank Bea and Stevie in the Service Team at Boucher Road Nissan. They were both kind, professional and sympathetic. Stevie is a Top class Nissan Engineer who knows his stuff. He diagnosed my Auto Juke gear box problem within seconds. Exceptional service and he went the extra mile by taking car out for test drive to feel and hear the issues car had. You are a credit to Nissan.
If you buy a car from Charles Hurst after reading this, you deserve what comes next. In July 2025, I bought a 2018 Audi A5, 1 owner from new, 47k on the clock. Car looked in great condition and came with an RAC 180 point check carried out by Charles Hurst themselves that had every box ticked green. There was even an invoice to say they installed a new battery, new number plates and an invoice for the oil and filter from the service they just gave it. I checked over the car, read through all the paperwork and even checked the old MOTs online, aha got ya! The car was MOTd 3 months previous and had an advisory for both rear suspension mounts perished. Flagged it with the team that they were marked green on their report, but an advisory at MOT. They swore regardless of their appearance they were road legal but to keep me happy and get the sale they would replace them. An investment of around £500 from them plus they knocked £300 quid off as the DSG system needed a service and meant I could bring it to Audi, great deal or so I thought. 2 days and less than 100 miles of ownership the car broke down at the roadside. Had to call the RAC through the provided 6 months warranty (stay tuned this gets dodgy). As it was a public holiday I couldn’t get towed to Charles Hurst, so instead got towed to a local garage until they opened. They opened 2 days later and I informed them of the issue. Long story short RAC only tow once per breakdown, so I had to pay £120 to have the car towed over to Newtownards for inspection (never got this refunded despite being told I would). Turned out the alternator belt had snapped. When I went to pick it up the next day, the mechanics said these exact words “that belt has been slipping a long time, you could see the rust on the alternator wheelâ€. Guess what, it was marked green on their report. And the flat battery was replaced to get it out the yard and now they’d just got paid £600 from RAC for replacing a belt they already knew was faulty, plus the new battery packed in after the belt snapped so another new one of those. Fast forward a couple of weeks the car is in with Audi getting the DSG oil changed. They completed a health check and discovered all the tyre pressures were low (around 20psi) and that all four tyres were cracked on the side wall and in danger of blow out and required immediate attention. 2 front control arms were completely knackered with the other 2 on their way out. Needed new spark plugs, cost me £150. As I collected my car to bring it back to Charles Hurst to have the controls arms looked at, the tyres now at the correct PSI the knocking and shaking from the faulty control arms was impossible to miss. They’d under pressurised the tyres to hide the fact the tyres were damaged and that the control arms were faulty. RAC again paid £1100 to Charles Hurst to repair a fault they already knew about! This car was sold with “a full bill of health†but had perished suspension bushes, unsafe tyres (replaced by myself at £550) faulty control arms and a damaged alternator belt. I drove my wife and kids in this car and we’re lucky to be alive. They received £1700 with their RAC warranty scam, and I’m out £820 on tyres, plugs and towing costs. It doesn’t end here. When my car was in with Audi I set up the connect app that allows my car and phone to talk to each other and communicate with Audi. Phone call from them today, 20/01/2026 to say the oil sensor has detected that the oil quality is perished and is due a service. Couldn’t be I said it was only done in July by……. Sorry sir, doesn’t sound like it was. They apparently serviced it 7 months / 7k miles ago and it’s due already. Something doesn’t sound right!! I will never, ever deal with this company again and if you do you are an absolute fool! Taking people for clowns as they think they’re too big to be challenged or caught! EDIT: have reported through the recommended channels in the response below and 2 months later have heard absolutely nothing!!
Unbelievably unreliable experience. Robert Smith had no idea what he was doing and a number of things went wrong. First he kept showing us sold cars, then charged us on the wrong account and laughed at it and the worst part was they told us the car would be ready today and it is not. Super unprofessional and lazy.
